static noise simulator

As a kid I've always been fascinated by static noise from a tv. I liked the hypnotic flickering and always tried to find pattern in the noise. I haven't seen any noise on a tv-screen for a while (are they even capable of displaying noise?) so I wrote a simulator for static noise in processing.

click on the sketch and move the mouse around. The x-axis controlls the contrast the y-axis controlls the blur effekt.

    Most modern TVs still have analog tuners so they can still tune to the static pattern you want. However, because they are smart they blank static channels. They do this by looking for a well formed blanking bar. No bar, no channel. It is possible to create a circuit to insert a valid blanking barand leave the static.
