I played a bit with the displacement output of cycles materials and the new experimental "true" displacement feature in the mesh settings

For this animation I created a sequence with the breaking sphere and then a second one for the melting effect. Then I combined them using the video sequence editor, by reversing the first part and then playing the second part.
